I disagree little bit with some statements in this article, based on my previous experience, owning and driving different cars before.
3 x Skoda - 1.1L, 1.2L, 1.3L, M/T, rear engine, rear-wheel drive
Tends to heavy over steering, due to the weight in back, easily to get out of control and make nice drifting uncontrolled rotations in curves
2 x Opel Vectra - 1.6, M/T, front engine, front-wheel drive
Very powerful and economic, front-wheel drive performing excellent in mountainuous curves, mainly driving up
1 x Ford Mondeo - 2.0L, M/T, front engine, front-wheel drive
Excellent car, with great acceleration at speeds around 100 km/h, very stable in curves
1 x Opel Frontera, 2.2L TurboDiesel, M/T, 4x4, front engine, rear wheel drive
One of the worst cars I ever had, suspension collapsed after 50,000 km, didn't follow the front steering on snow, it was just driving straight
1 x Ford Sierra, 2.0L, M/T, front engine, rear-wheel drive
High performance and good steering, very stable
1 x Mazda 626, 2.2.L, M/T, front engine, front-wheel drive
Excellent on long trips, very good steering and control
1 x Ford Explorer, 4.0L, M/T, 4x4, front engine, rear wheel drive
Excellent performance, due to the M/T, very good steering and control
1 x Alfa Romeo 156, 2.0L, M/T, front engine, front wheel drive
Superb performance, very precise steering and control, almost a sports car, one of the best cars I owned. It took me quite a bit time to learn how to drive this car.
1 x Jaguar XJ6, 4.0L, A/T, front engine, rear-wheel drive
Excellent limousine, switching the gear to Sports mode, changed the car to a fast devil, living behind all Germans, very good control, no over steering
1 x Dodge Intrepid, 3.5L, A/T, front engine (Mitsubishi), rear-wheel drive
Very good performance and steering, unfortunately got a fire under way
1 x Nissan Pathfinder, 3.5L, M/T, 4x4, front engine, rear-wheel drive
Excellent acceleration and very good control, sits perfectly in curves
1 x Nissan X-Trail, 2.5L, A/T, front engine, front-wheel drive
Very good car with nice performance, tends to drive straight in slippery conditions, in 4x4 mode
From all this, I can confirm, that front engine with front-wheel drive is the best in mountains, where it can accelerate in the first third of the curve and bring with high speed the car out. Even with over speed, entering the curve, it is easy to control the drive.
On the other hand with front engine and rear-wheel drive, you have have to be very careful, with what speed you are entering a curve, otherwise, it is easy to fly out and the car is easily out of the control.
